Reading- Students participate in differentiated reading instruction in a variety of ways:

  • Daily Book Shopping- Students “shop” for developmentally appropriate books to create their personal library.
  • Guided Reading groups
  • Individual reading with teachers
  • Shared Reading
  • Sample Reading Lesson- Students read a nonfiction text,
    All About Honeybees
by Jerry Albert.  After reading they recalled key facts and completed a comic strip about newly acquired information. Then students collaborated with one another to act out a page assigned pages from book, which was captured on film to create a class video production.

Writing- Students learn proper letter formation through Fundations.. Using the Writing Workshop model of Lucy Calkins, students engage in the ongoing process of writing and develop their own voice as authors. Daily writing activities also include:

    • Mini lessons about the writing process
    • Creating books
    • Working with editing partners
    • Conferring with teachers
Word Study- Students learn about spelling patterns and word families through Word’s Their Way. Weekly word work activities include:

    • Word Sorts
    • Constructing words with various manipulatives
    • Studying “popcorn” ( high frequency words)
